Poké-POWER ⇢ Energy Connect
As often as you like during your turn (before your attack), you may take a basic Energy card attached to 1 of your Benched Pokémon and attach it to your Active Pokémon. This power can’t be used if Ampharos is affected by a Special Condition.
{L}{L}{C}{C} → Lightning Strike : 40
You may discard all {L} Energy cards attached to Ampharos. If you do, this attack’s base damage is 80 instead of 40.

RS Blaziken (#5) has a lot of combo opportunities available to it, but one is with this Ampharos. Once you’ve got the requisite 3 Energy attached to your Blaziken, the combination of their Poké-Powers (Firestarter+Energy Connect) will allow you to keep repeating the {R} discard on Blaziken’s Fire Stream without having to keep taking up your once-per-turn Energy attachment. This is shouted out in Volume 21 of Pokémon Card Trainers Magazine (pp.36).

It wouldn’t exist for another year, but strictly speaking, Team Aqua’s Manectric does the same thing on a stage 1… at least, “once per turn.” That operative phrase, however, opens up another combo. As long as you’re setting up a stage 2 rather than a stage 1, you need not stop at Firestarter. You could lean in more heavily on the Rayquaza ex package historically seen in Blaziken decks, running an extra copy and a few more Multi Energy (or Lightning Energy), since you could theoretically chain multiple Dragon Burst. It also makes Blaziken ex’s Volcanic Ash less awkward.
Also, the magazine was right that this was the best option for this utility at the time and is an exciting piece of trivia!
