I wonder why Team Flare didn’t get its own real mechanic in the same way that Rocket/Magma/Aqua/Plasma/Galactic did. No actual featured Pokemon, and TFG really is just a trivial label.

I was just thinking this yesterday as well. Maybe the subtag is a remnant of that idea.

Huh. Neither Aether or Team Skull got their own mechanic in Gen 7, either. I don’t know what Gen 8’s thing was but I guess they also got nothing.

In Gen VIII the name tags were Single Strike, Rapid Strike and Fusion Strike. And there were proper mechanics attached to those tags, like the Team Plasma decks of old.
Mew VMAX copies the moves of benched Fusion Strike Pokémon.
Rapid Strike Style Mustard recovers a Rapid Strike Pokémon and draws you five cards.
Impact Energy is a Rainbow Energy for Single Strike Pokémon with no downsides.
etc. etc.

Yeah, you’re absolutely right in that there *was* a mechanic for Gen VIII – it just wasn’t affiliated with the respective villainous group for the generation. With a fair amount of conjecture I could suppose it’s might’ve originally been intended to represent PLA’s Agile Style/Rapid Style mechanic and therefore an implicit representation of Team Galactic (…?), but even if that was the case, the final product diverged from the intent pretty significantly and none of that affiliation is apparent.

There are so many other combinations from Pokemon attacks to Trainer cards. Definitely a March Madness must have!
