Just realized there is no restriction on basic M energy here

  The only non basic Metal is Shield Energy but is only Metal Energy when it is attached to a Metal Pokémon otherwise it’s just Colourless but hopefully in the future we get some in the future.

        It’s still a metal energy in all zones though, and thus a valid target.
        
        But yeah it used to reduce damage done by the Pokemon if it wasn’t M type, right?

        Yes, it was also used to reduce self-damage, like by Zapdos or Chansey.
