That’s actually a brilliant idea for a card. Like a Baby Pokemon for Fossils.

I don’t know, honestly. It must be a conspiracy.

Watch out man, once the conspiracy starts, it’ll be hard to stop the slew of supporters and sinister inventions

Atsuko Ujiie was the director of CR CG gangs. This is the first card she received credit for in the English TCG, but probably had a hand in several CG cards in the Neo era. (This is actually the second card art she was directly credited for, after the JP-only Pokémon Center Tokyo.)

Old Dome Fossil from the upcoming set Pokémon Card 151 has been revealed¹𝄒², and it functions very similarly to this card – though there are several notable exceptions, such as that it’s a Trainer card, it only evolves into Kabuto, etc. the primary commonality of interest is its “evolves into Kabuto” mechanic, which revives something we haven’t seen in a very, very long time. It’s a (part of) the Baby mechanics brought back to life, or at the least an invocation of the mechanics of this card.

I made a post on Pokébeach in response to some questions coming up – “can Old Dome Fossil evolve into other Kabuto cards that don’t say they evolve from it?” – and for me, it feels like a fairly straightforward case that for the Japanese side of things, the e-Card/ADV/PCG era very explicitly created an opportunity for all Omanyte/Kabuto/Aerodactyl cards to “either/or” w/r/t Buried Fossil and Mysterious Fossil, and though there’s some wiggle room³, I’d go so far as to say any ruling that said something to the effect of “Old Dome Fossil cannot evolve into DP Kabuto/XY Kabuto/SM Kabuto” would be wrong.. and that’d apply for this card as well. They’re only *technically* not obliged to precedent because of how old the card is and the fact rulings aren’t necessarily worried about inconsistency with cards that are this old, but if you *solely* look at the Japanese game, I can’t think of any time they ever made major deviations in maintaining the consistency of at least the spirit – in this case, when a card says it can “Evolve into Y”, it overrides the “Evolves from X” that is printed on any version of Y. (Extreme example: if even a *Pikachu* card said it “Evolves into Kabuto”, then it too could evolve into any card called Kabuto, point blank, no questions asked.)

I think this is a great example of where “well, let’s wait for the ruling” seems unnecessary to me. I know that can ruffle some feathers from folks I talk to about this game and suggest a TPCI ruling “could be wrong”, so I’d be interested in hearing any arguments to the contrary from any of the regulars (or lurkers) here and why you feel that way?

² I don’t like talking about cards before they’re up on this site, because you necessarily have to bear in mind card names may be subject to change and set names almost always are. You’re not even necessarily guaranteed cards you anticipate to show up in a certain set actually will show up in that set, etc. so I apologize for breaking my own thought processes with this post.
³ This card is so old and rulings/mechanics don’t seem to be beholden to precedents sets prior to DP1, if not even later.

Incidental to the above, this card joins a limited and scattershot selection of other pre-DP cards (e.g. LM Kecleon) that get mentioned in pokemon-card.com’s Q&A section. A search for ちていのかせき brings up myriad false positives, but there is at least one relevant Q&A – on a question regarding whether or not Fossil Excavator can search for Buried Fossil. (The answer is a definitive no, because Fossil Excavator can only search for *Trainer cards* with Fossil in their name.)
