One of the few Pokemon that can OHKO everything in the game. (If we ignore factors like Expert Belt or other HP boosters.)

Lugia LEGEND we have now and is actually a decent rogue card.

Except Lugia LEGEND still applies PokePower’s Poke Bodies, Weakness, Resistance, etc. What makes Charizard ex different is that he hits for the current maximum HP, but isn’t stopped by the likes of Mr. Mime JU or similar negations.

Unfortunately, 13 years of power creep changed this…

Same price as Mewtwo-EX and nowhere near as playable. I wonder whether Mewtwo-EX will stay as valuable as this guy, even after rotation (Mewtwo is nearly as popular as Charizard after all)…

I wonder how much Charizard ex and Mewtwo EX were worth 13 years ago…

I feel like Mewtwo EX would have been at least $100 before the promo, given the stories of Yanmega Prime shooting up to $70 after the 2011 emergency rotation (Where it went from niche at best to a four-of in multiple decks).

Actually maybe would this guy work in Unlimited with Emboar? OHKO, discard energy, attach energy, rinse, repeat.

Also the art is kinda cool but the perspective looks a bit weird.

Unless an errata was applied, this doesn’t work. the energy only counts as fire energy when it is already attached to Charizard.

Why wouldn’t it work? I was talking about Emboar not Eelektrik.

I think he was talking about the guy above you who wanted to use this with DCE and Boost. You added an Emboar comment right after, so…yeah. But this can still be played with Emboar in a ruthlessly inefficient way.

Bought a mint one of these at a store last year for 40
bucks. And I will NEVER play with this in battle lol, way too valuable.

Was this card ever actually competitive?

I don’t know, but it was the first card to break the 200-damage barrier

Nope. As a result, Pokémon thought it would be safe to print another card, Lugia ex, that could also discard all Energy attached to it to do 200. Sure, it was a basic Pokémon, but requiring three Energy of specific types instead of five Energy of any type should be enough to balance that, right? … right?
Evidently they had forgotten about Lugia ex by the time they printed Holon’s Castform. Thanks to Blastoise ex, you can attach a Water Energy to Lugia ex, manually attach the Holon’s Castform, and reattach the Water Energy to nuke anything in the format, leading to the creation of the iconic 2006 season archetype LBS.
(Which I’m sure at least half of this site’s regular users have already heard of.)
