so we all know that Charizard can be used in any deck thanks to its Pokemon-power, and the pre evos have colorless attacks to reflect that ability. But, if you can just hear me out, do you think that it could have been to future proof the line in case there was ever a flying (colorless) type Charizard?

Charmaster
Charmeleon is not only a stepping stone to Charizard in one of Prop 15/3’s best decks (https://retrotcgs.com/2025/01/20/prop-15-3-deck-diary-charizard/), but it’s also a solid attacker in its own right. It can 2HKO most Pokémon in the format, and while Charizard gets reduced to 20 HP by Clefable, Charmeleon can afford to trade 2HKO’s with Clefable if you play Metronome as intended by the game’s creators (https://jklaczpokemon.com/wotc-erratas/). This is assuming the Clefable player hasn’t teched a Fire Energy or doesn’t use Fire types; I once lost a game to a Clefable player who Computer Searched for a basic Fire Energy.
Part of what makes Prop 15/3 Charizard fun are the incentives you’re given to not evolve your star line too quickly. In addition to being a solid attacker, Charmeleon also has a lower retreat cost, making it less likely to be stranded. I discuss this aspect of the deck more under Team Rocket Charmander.
