Seemingly possessed, it spews fire like a volcano, trying to burn all it sees.

Nail Flick?

Dark Charizard is SO arrogant that it won’t bother with a Fireball against most opponents :P I remember loading this guy up with Darkness Energy and Nail Flick KOing things just for the insult value (Darkness energy used to be different).

I think it’s just a basic flick…

One of my favorite cards, wish I knew how to make him work though. His attack is pretty finicky, though if you were to, say, give him 4 burning energy and a trick coin, he could do some consistent damage. Shame about the HP though.

Giving anything four Burning Energy is pretty tough. You could just use Blacksmith, Welder, etc. to drop Energy onto it. The best results I actually had with Dark Charizard was using it how Hez said; using the Special Energy card version of Darkness Energy, back when it boosted damage from Dark (not just Darkness Type) Pokémon. Of course, it wasn’t particularly effective and in the modern Unlimited Format, all these options seem pretty pointless.
At least, with what little I know about modern Unlimited. No one I know seriously plays it, I’m PTCGO-only right now anyway so I couldn’t join in even if I wanted to, and the handful of people who bring it up make outlandish claims then insult me for not being a “real player”… due to not playing Unlimited, as opposed to the PTCGO-thing. They seem to ignore all the counters – including First Turn Win or lock decks – I mention for their strategies. XP

I play a casual format with my friends consisting of Base Set through Platinum Arceus. There are a lot of specific bans and stuff to try and make older cards more viable. Dark Charizard is one of those cards I personally vouch for and try to make usable :p

When trying to better balance out a Base Set through Fossil format, I never was able to establish a play-testing group to verify my hypothesis. As such, I’m curious if the two cards I found needed to be banned made your group’s list: Energy Removal and Super Energy Removal. Feel free to let me know. XD
If memory serves, defending Dark Charizard is what ultimately got me reviewing cards for Pojo. I mean, it was a slow, slow path because I didn’t actually get to post a CotD for another 20 months, but disagreeing with everyone but RaNd0m led me to PM him about reviewing cards… and after waiting for him to put in a good word for me, I just got a chance anyway when Pojo put out an open call for new reviewers. For what it’s worth, there’s a tool for the GameBoy PTCG that allows you to edit the cards. There are some limitations that I have found:
1.) You can’t add any new effects, but you can reuse any existing ones.
1a.) By an extension of this. while you can edit the damage for any attack, but you can’t edit the damage for any effects (such as coin flip attacks)
2.) Frustratingly, static Pokemon Powers (Toxic Gas, Kabuto Armor, ect.) seem to be hardcoded to that Pokemon. So, any Pokemon that has one of these static Powers will always have that Power, even if you remove it from the card with the tool. This also means that adding one of those powers to another Pokemon, it will do nothing at all.
3.) The tool is only for Pokemon, so you can’t edit trainers, which means ER and SER still exist.
I tried to build and test my own meta by doing this earlier this year. I had a color identity mapped out for each type, but then I ran across point #2, and it kind of killed my ambition. Still, if you have an idea and want to test it, a (bad) CPU opponent is better than none at all.
