As far as I can tell, this was the first “Crush” attack that discards an energy from your opponent’s active Pokemon.

It seems like it’s related to Hyper Beam.
Hyper Beam: はかいこうせん – usually translated as “Destruction Beam”
Crushing Blow: はかいのいちげき – if Hyper Beam is “Destruction Beam,” this “Destruction Blow”
That would explain why it has the same “Discard an Energy” effect as Hyper Beam does. Neat!
