If the Pokémon Darkness Energy is attached to damages the Defending Pokémon (after applying Weakness and Resistance), the attack does 10 more damage to the Defending Pokémon. At the end of every turn, put 1 damage counter on the Pokémon Darkness Energy is attached to, unless it’s {D} or has Dark in its name.
Darkness Energy provides {D} Energy. (Doesn’t count as a basic Energy card.)

By far my favourite variant on this energy.

Am I the only one that liked the original Dark/Metal energies giving their effects to all Pokemon, but with a downside for those of different types?

I’ve never been clear on what the Darkness Energy symbol in the TCG is meant to be. I might have found an answer. In 1992, Magical Taruruto-kun, a GAME FREAK developed platformer based on an anime that was airing at the time, was released (only ever in Japan) for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, and some of the backgrounds of the last stage of the game features a symbol that looks, well, nearly identical to the Darkness Energy symbol the Pokémon TCG uses. https://youtu.be/CgcItbyzgZo?t=1968
I’m not particularly sure of whether this was a ‘symbol’ taken from the manga/anime or an original thing GF just came up with on their own. I’d assume it’s the latter since it seems dicey to take a symbol that isn’t yours and use it in your long-running TCG series, but I will note that the shape of the symbol looks reminiscent of the shape of the head of the final boss of the game. https://youtu.be/CgcItbyzgZo?t=2106
I have to admit I’m not entirely convinced I’m right, but it’s the best explanation I’ve got.

I’ve always interpreted it as a twisted crescent moon, but a simplified sort of devil head fits the “Evil-type” name even better. The resemblance could be coincidental but still intended to be interpreted the same way – horns on a round head.

I recently noticed that Bendy of Bendy and the Ink Machine actually has a similar head shape as well, being a stylized cartoon demon not too unlike the final boss of Magical Taruruto-kun. While it’s almost definitely a coincidence, it further convinces me this sort of crescent shape might just be a common natural end-point when trying to simplify devil horns as much as possible.
