Why the low rating? This card was the sheet.

This card looks more like a weaker Gyarados.

50 damage for 3 energy? From what I can tell, that’s boss in Base Set. I used Dewgong in my Classic Sets only Water deck and it was super effective. :)
Only problems are it’s not-so-high HP. Also, Seal has a very weak 10 damage attack but, a high 60 HP; this is twice as much of that puny Magikarp! I guess that all balances out.

In fact, for base set parameters this is good. But in a format with Haymaker Gyarados is more useful against the Hitmonchan/Electabuzz duo, although Magikarp is a perfect Gust of Wind bait (Seel is harder to OHKO, except against Electabuzz of course). Maybe in a two color deck (with double colorless energies) this would be better than Gyarados (specially with fighting to balance the lightning weakness)

Forgot that Magikarp is weak to lightning and not grass as Gyarados. Then even Against Electabuzz Seel is better than the Karp!

It’s funny that you mention two color decks. I once asked Jason Klaczynski on Discord what he won the Tropical Mega Battle with, and he said Dewgong / Primeape. People won events with all sorts of weird decks back in the day, and Haymaker’s takeover was fairly gradual. (Scroll down a little to find a tournament results page from Scyre Magazine… you can see some events conquered by early haymaker builds and others won by Pokémon TCG Gameboy-style evolution line pyramid decks. https://jklaczpokemon.com/1999-base-fossil/#jungle)

(In case you’re suspicious, this isn’t a flex or a lie made up for attention. He talks about retro Pokémon quite a bit on discord, including the TCGONE discord server.)

Wow, nice to know that guy is accesible, his site is fantastic! No suspicion here, I believe on it xD I had already saw that image and it is very cool to imagine how these tournaments went, possibly they were funnier that way, with more card variety and less people maxing on ER/SER. POJO site still has early “killer decks” with “tips” on using these cards, tips that may appear silly nowadays (including a Gyarados vs Dewgong discussion)

This Dewgong is one of the examples of exceptions of my energy cost calculation hypothesis for the first sets (as I commented below Base set Hitmonchan). It does 50 damage for WWC , which should does 40 (as Hitmonchan does). Other exceptions from the same set include Kadabra’s Super Psy and Wartortle’s Bite (40 for WCC, while most attacks with that cost does 30, as Jungle Rhyhorn/Rhydon). Bite is notable as being mostly undercosted (20 damage for C in Rattata / Raticate)
