Did you come here from my comment on Electabuzz 𝒆𝒙? Well done! (If not, go there first.)
Continuing where I left off, while the BW era had decided to bin the idea of Lightning Pokémon in the TCG being resistant to {M}, XY decided to bring it back. For all of them! Except a few;
· Emolga and Zapdos can be omitted from consideration here, as they have {F} Resistance instead.
· Flying Pikachu and Surfing Pikachu can be understood to be special cases.
Leaving us with the following oddities:
· XY Voltorb and Electrode don’t have an {M} Resistance, but when they show up in ROS and EVO, they do.
· FFI Electabuzz and Electivire do have an {M} Resistance, but don’t in BKP. Electabuzz has it again when he shows up in EVO.
· This time, Chinchou and Lanturn DO have an {M} Resistance when they show up in PRC, which is strange, since the two had made a point of NOT having one even when it was standard for Lighting Pokémon to do so in previous blocks.
Whatever the logic for the omissions, they’re gone for the SM block – once again, *every* {L} Pokémon is Resistant to {M}, unless there’s a compelling overriding reason for them not to be;
· Zapdos and Emolga continue to prefer to be {F} Resistant instead, and this time Oricorio joins them.
· Tapu Koko GX is being weird, don’t worry about it. (Along with the other Tapu GX, Tapu Koko GX elects to have this weird special treatment Legendary Pokémon sometimes get in their debut generation. Here they have no Resistance, even if they’re entitled to one, but in exchange have no Weaknesses either.)
Which brings us to Sword & Shield. Like BW before it, it looks like SWSH has decided to bin the {M} Resistance entirely. Will Gen 9 continue to omit this? The teaser picture for Magnezone 𝒆𝒙 that was shown off during Worlds 2022 didn’t *look* like it had a Resistance, so Lightning Pokémon might be out of luck for another entire block. We’ll find out for sure next year..
