This and Chandelure EX LTR were the first and only time a Pokemon that wouldn’t naturally be a Basic Pokemon became a Pokemon-EX. It honestly begs the question why they did it in the first place, and why, for the first and (currently) only time they retained a block’s primary gimmick into a new block when they could have just made Mega Pokemon their own thing, not stapled on top of the EX mechanic. These two cards just kinda seem bizarre in the context of any EX that came before it, but became completely standard just a set later. Weird, right?
