Is there any situation in Expanded in which it would be preferable to use this card instead of Enhanced Hammer?

There are very few ways to accelerate special energies from the discard pile, so discarding the special energy card is, prima facie, the better option. If the card goes right back into their deck, your opponent could use an item card like Ordinary Rod or Energy Recycler to shuffle their deck and move the special energy card from the bottom of the deck back to the top, where it could be drawn or accelerated.

**Correction: both Ordinary Rod and Energy Recycler apply to only BASIC energy cards. I don’t think there’s been an item card printed that allows you to get –special– energy cards out of the discard pile. (you’d need a Supporter like Roseanne’s Backup for that)

Special Energy recovers 2 special energy and is an item, but I believe that’s the only one.

You mean Special Charge from Steam Siege, right?
There’s also Urn of Vitality, but that’s specific to Single Strike special energy cards.
