This ability/Poke-Power first appeared as “Flash Bite” on Crobat G, and then “Shadow Knife” on Greninja ✩. Seems like it’s associated with Dark or Poison type Pokemon.

The concept started off as a Zubat family thing. The mechanic *effectively* debuted as a Pokémon Power on RO Dark Golbat ..though there is a difference insofar as Dark Golbat dealt 10 damage, rather than placing 1 damage counter. Dark Crobat mechnically did the same – its Power Surprise Bite doubled it to 20 damage, and it’s presumably either one or both which Crobat G then borrowed to refine into Flash Bite.
