No Weakness, a relevant Resistance, no Retreat Cost, an average-but-not-awful HP stat AND an attack that can prevent an attack coming your way the next turn.
In one sense, a very good defensive Pokemon for an evolving Basic.
Otaku
For its time, this was a very good Gastly. Even the second attack which you mentioned was nearly good; had the cost been less it would have probably seen play. Sure we had Energy Retrieval, but this was pre-errata (you had to discard a card from hand to use it). Nightly Garbage Run was two sets away (Fossil => Base Set 2 => Team Rocket). More important was this card had a great Haunter to Evolve into, but the only Gengar was meh.
