This card was a turning point in Mina Nakai’s illustration style. Whereas previous cards had featured more of a softer, painted style which often bore resemblances to watercolors, this illustration and subsequent ones featured thicker outlines and crisper colors, usually complemented by simple, vertical line crosshatching and intermittent gradients. The effect feels like a cartoon.
This Helioptile is particularly unique due to the grid of white dots covering every part of the illustration except the Helioptile itself, making it truly feel like something out of a comic book or graphic novel.
This texture reminds me of stitched wash towels and diamond plate aluminum.
