While seeming to do nothing, it fires punches in lightning-fast volleys that are impossible to see.

Turns out that this wasn’t a typo, but actually a deliberate misprint. WOTC wanted Electric types to be stronger in the TCG, and this was their attempt at nerfing a card many Electric types were weak to.

Oooh, and that’s more evidence for the theory that Neo Genesis’ Slowking was purposefully mistranslated in a misguided attempt to make trainer cards worse.

The Hitmonchan thing is proof they’re willing to deliberately misprint things to alter the game to their own whims, and the Slowking situation mirrors it directly with the same “play it as printed” mentality that apparently allowed them to get away with 60 HP Hitmonchan. Even when the error was pointed out and Slowking had become a meta-altering force, Wizards still refused to issue an errata, eventually just banning the card outright once it had been long established how toxic it was. The fact the Slowking “mistranslation” isn’t so much a mistranslation as it is the omission of an entire sentence from its power is also suspicious.

I’ve linked this article under the Sandstorm Jolteon card (a possible card from the cancelled Jamboree set, according to the article) and don’t want to go linking it under every single card it might also be relevant to as it seems like it could be a tacky precedent for the future, but it *is* particularly relevant here as this features someone interviewing ex-Wizards staff and does a lot of documentation on how lowly they thought of the Pokemon TCG. In particular they wanted to buff the Electric type and part of the way to get there would be deliberately nerfing one of the best Fighting type cards in the game. I think Twylis is dead-on about Slowking being a deliberate “mistranslation.” https://www.matobadesign.com/jamboree

At least according to Bulbapedia (in the best of game set page), this (and other errors in the set) was intentional as a kind of revenge due to WoTC not being able to renew the contract…
