Ability ⇢ Reviving Flame
Once during your turn, if this Pokémon is in your discard pile, you may put it onto your Bench. If you do, attach up to 4 basic Energy cards from your discard pile to this Pokémon. If you use this Ability, your turn ends.
{C}{C}{C}{C} → Rainbow Burn : 100+
This attack does 30 more damage for each type of basic Energy attached to this Pokémon.
· V rule: When your Pokémon V is Knocked Out, your opponent takes 2 Prize cards.

· Ho-Oh most recently appeared in the TCG as a {C} type in Lost Thunder – that card was a spiritual reprint/retrain of the first time Ho-Oh had appeared in the TCG as a {C} card, all the way back in Neo Revelation.
· Lost Thunder was also the second time a {C} Ho-Oh card and a {C} Lugia appeared in the same set in the English edition of the TCG, something that as far as I can tell has never happened in the Japanese TCG. (This set’s Ho-Oh V is from S11a Incandescent Arcana, and Lugia V (and VSTAR) is from S12 Paradigm Trigger.)
· Speaking of that Neo Revelation Ho-Oh, that Ho-Oh was the debut of Rainbow Burn, an attack which is Ho-Oh’s signature attack in the TCG¹, having subsequently appeared several times on Ho-Oh cards printed during Generation 3, 4, and 5 (and 7, depending on how you consider the retrain). This is the most potent version of Rainbow Burn yet, but it’s apparently too slow for Ho-Oh to be a serious contender in the current metagame.
There are currently two questions about Ho-Oh V on pokemon-card.com’s website²;
𝑄. Can I use Ho-Oh V’s Ability from the Discard Pile if Path to the Peak is in play?
𝐴. Yes. In this case, you’re able to put Ho-Oh V on the Bench, and attach up to 4 Basic Energy cards from your Discard Pile to Ho-Oh V. Then your turn would end. [Note; i.e., Path to the Peak targets Abilities of Pokémon in play, and a Ho-Oh V in the Discard Pile is not “in play”. The elaboration here is to presumably so as to clarify to the reader that not just can you put Ho-Oh V on the Bench, the Ability wouldn’t ‘stop’ now that it’s in play – you would be able to complete the entire effect of it.]
𝑄. If I don’t have a single Basic Energy in my Discard Pile, am I still able to use Ho-Oh V’s Ability?
𝐴. Yes, in this case you would put Ho-Oh V on your Bench and end your turn.
¹ Except for that one time Flygon DR 4 borrowed it without asking.
² Note: Japan’s Q&A is not the same as the Q&A Compendium – these are NOT precedent-setting ‘rulings’, these ARE considered clarifications of extant rules spelled out in their guidebook. I haven’t clarified this every time I’ve translated Q&As as I thought it was obvious, but I can see how for some this could be confusing. Those interested and capable should read through the Advanced Manual available at https://www.pokemon-card.com/assets/document/advanced_manual.pdf
³ I will vouch for my translations as ‘good enough for the sake of a pseudonymous comment on the internet, and probably good enough to start planning decks and whatnot, but I could be wrong too sometimes :)’
