This Pokémon is blown across vast distances by the wind. It is unclear where the Hoppip of Paldea originally came from.

    An observation on Hoppip in specific, and then a meta-comment on this set because it’s the first card in the ordered list;

    1. “Splashing Dodge”? Oh, TPCI, don’t you people ever learn? Originating on BUS Magikarp, the attack repeats the exact same sin that NOA executed on the video game attack we know as Splash so many years ago, as it probably should’ve been translated as ‘Hopping Dodge’ (or something along those lines), just as Splash probably should’ve been translated as ‘Hop’. You might argue it’s for consistency’s sake, since it’s clearly meant to be a variant on the attack we know as Splash anyway, but we end up with the exact same inanity as a result, and now we’re clearly stuck with it for the sake of consistency. (The sins of 1997 continue to repeat themselves, localization was a mistake, every day we stray further from Satoshi’s vision¹, etc. etc. etc.)

    2. This is a comment I left on another forum that I’m going to copy over with some tweaks, but my enthusiasm for the EN game’s reforms is tempered a bit, here;

    I was really disappointed to realize that SV1’s set stamp wasn’t SV1EN, but rather SVIEN, when noticing this set’s stamp is PALEN, rather than SV2EN. I’m also rather disappointed TPCI is still keeping up these antics of arbitrarily moving cards around for the sake of set sizes (which are never kept consistent anyways), which continues to make it an extra step insofar as figuring out the pedigree of an English language/international card relative to its Japanese counterpart. Whatever the justifications to see a lot of unnecessary tweaks to set lists – e.g. Ampharos 𝒆𝒙 was dropped from SVIEN and awkwardly orphans a Flaaffy in a base set, Pikachu 𝒆𝒙 in PALEN interrupts a standard Pikachu > Raichu line – doesn’t seem to help players whatsoever, and for collectors, it just looks stupid in a binder anyway.

    SV1EN made so many great strides in harmonizing the game with the primary language edition I felt about ready to say the only meaningful differences was the difference in card stock, and the card back, but there are still these incidental quibbles coming up. I don’t know why TPCI is so obsessed with making things different for the sake of being different, but now that the silver border is standard across languages, the KR edition of the TCG is currently a more appealing proposition than buying the EN edition on a dollar cost basis, and the JP edition remains the uncontested champion in terms of overall quality.

    ¹ no not the bitcoin guy. that’s true too, though
