I pulled this card from Solgaleo’s tin.

This card was pretty good at the time but its weird looking back how Pokemon printed an offensive-focused EX that only did 50 damage at a time. Such a low number when most EX’s, even the unplayable ones, had some way of doing triple-digit damage.

Whoa, this isn’t an offense-focused card, it is a mill focused card. Houndoom-EX found success as a deck that ran your opponent out of cards. It also could go for KO’s, but that was the job of Raticate (XY – Evolutions 67/108), and only if your opponent was running enough Special Energy cards. A fallback option, as it were.

i meant ‘offensive’ in the sense that it isn’t a bench-only support card like Jirachi-EX, Manaphy-EX, etc. There was probably a more accurate description I could’ve used, sorry

Okay, I see what you meant. Yes, Houndoom-EX was a main attacker with low damage output, but it isn’t as abnormal as it sounds, at least for this period.

Wailord-EX had an attack that did 120 damage, but you know how much damage competitive Wailord-EX decks averaged each turn? Zero. Wailord-EX wasn’t a Bench-sitter either, but meant to be your Active. However, instead of being an attacker, it was a “meat shield”, “blocker”, “wall”, etc. You left it up front because it was hard to KO, used a bunch of disruption to make it almost impossible for your opponent to OHKO it, included healing so that it was almost impossible to KO even over multiple turns, plus a little bit of mill if you had room, because you won through your opponent decking out.

Seismitoad-EX could could do 130 damage with its second attack, but it almost never did. Instead, its claim to fame was its first attack, “Quaking Punch”, that only did 30 damage. However, Quaking Punch also prevented your opponent from being able to play Item cards from their hand. Though Seismitoad-EX decks did try to win through taking Prizes, and even through taking Prizes through attacking for damage, it was first and foremost a control deck. You made it hard for your opponent to OHKO Seismitoad-EX, and made it difficult to KO over multiple turns. You then used Quaking Punch after Quaking Punch, with tricks like Muscle Band, Hypnotoxic Laser and Virbank City Gym to help make up for the low base damage.
