This card has a really neat effect and has the potential to be a real game-changer. Could be even better than Welder (UNB 189) in certain situations. Did it ever see much use when it came out?

This was used, yes! You could use this to get 5 Energy on Reshiram & Charizard-GX on your first turn (the extra Energy being from your “manual” attachment). However, those two cards were only legal together for about three months; by the time of Worlds, Kiawe had rotated (alongside Cosmic Eclipse becoming legal). Recall also that this was before the turn 1 no-Supporter rule came into effect, so getting this off going first to get an OHKO on an opposing Tag Team as early as turn 2 could give you quite an advantage.

Note that Tapu Lele-GX was also still legal (as well as Ultra Ball), so there were many outs to getting the T1 Kiawe.

To further what numberonesoniafan is saying, Kiawe used to be a powerful Turn 1 (Player 1’s 1st Turn) Supporter. It was still solid Turn 2 (Player 2’s 1st Turn) play, and sometimes you’d have enough downtime to use it again after either player’s first turn. Obviously, you can no longer use Kiawe on Turn 1 (Player 1’s 1st Turn).

The other point I wanted to make is that Kiawe was heavily used by most Fire decks when Kiawe was new. numberonesoniafan cited Reshiram & Charizard-GX, and this is true, but this was Kiawe’s Last Hurrah in Standard. It wasn’t that every Fire Pokémon could use it well. It was just that Pokémon that benefited from attaching large amounts of Fire Energy were often elevated among their contemporaries. I no longer remember clearly, but I am fairly certain at least one or two non-Fire types also benefited (the card only species Energy type, not Pokémon type).

An example of one of the early attackers to make great use of Kiawe was Ho-Oh-GX (SM – Burning Shadows 21/147, 131/147; SM – Black Star Promos SM57, SM80; Shiny Vault SV50/SV90). Oh, and I am no longer able to edit cards, apparently. So I cannot fix the typo that most of the text spoilers of that Ho-Oh-GX feature. All but the first have the wrong name for its GX-attack.

Cool. Thanks for the info!! Man that sounds fun to play in Standard.
