Weird how big this scan is compared to Sandstorm’s scan!

火炎光背?
I just left a comment on Pupitar δ about how I can come up with a ton of vague reasons Tyranitar ex δ might’ve ended up as a Lightning type, but nothing especially compelling for it; meanwhile, Pupitar δ as a Lightning type feels perfect, no notes.
Gardevoir ex δ is a bit similar – I can think of a few things going on, but none feel super compelling. Meanwhile, it makes a fair bit of sense for Kirlia δ to be a Fire type. Kirlia is named after kirlian photography, which is parapsychological nonsense about photographing a person’s aura or ‘halo’. I’m stuck, though, because kirlian photography tries to photograph electrical discharges… but then I look at this artwork, which features a ‘halo’, but it’s obviously a firey halo. And maybe it’s emulating a particular kind of halo? Plugging 火炎光背 into image searches will get you Buddhist statues, some of which are featuring a wirey flame that don’t look too different from the artwork here.
If you take that idea of some sort of Buddhist reference along to Gardevoir ex δ, then the possibilities feel narrowed down to Imprisonment, or rather the original’s sealing, being executed as a Fire ritual.
This feels a little too high concept – like yes, there’s a ton of wordplay and puns in this set, but there are also a number of Pokémon in this set whose Delta Species types are simply “lol it matches their color” so I wonder if anyone else has any thoughts. Am I missing something obvious with the Gardevoir line?

By the way, even though it’s the first time the English translation team has localized it as
Smack, this is actually the sameひらてうちattack as first appeared on the first set’s Staryu and again on Staryu E-16.Gradually, it’s shown up on a variety of monsters since these initial appearances.
