“I was drawing this with relative freedom in the specifications, but when the order came, it included the direction that it should be “kind-looking.” I wavered over how to make the scary-looking Machoke seem kind, but I thought of it demonstrating kindness in using its strength to gently protect a pretty flower amidst a typhoon. Somehow, once restrictions were first applied in this case–and perhaps counterintuitively–I was able to picture the motions of the Pokémon I had struggled to draw to that point.”
