The strange thing about the way I build decks is that I prefer my trainers to be from their most recent set available (regardless of which one has accurate text) and all basic energies and DCE are from base set.

Not really a fan of the old energies. I like the EX-era ones (preferably the ones with no set mark if I have them), and whatever trainer kind I can get, but preferably newer. Unless the newer ones look worse, like the new Switch.

I’m a large fan of the EX: Emerald holo energy. More than the Holon Phantoms ones.

I always run a single Base Set energy for each color in each deck. I place it there as a memento of the olden days. As for DCE, I try to never have two from the same set in the same deck. :P
I use the newest Trainers, unless the older ones have better artwork.

Unless you seperate the league promo from the one in HS, that means you can’t run 4 DCE. Most decks I make that use DCE need to max out on it, so I like to keep them all the same artwork.

You speak of Modified. When I build Modified I agree, it’s best to use all the same artwork. Oddly enough, it makes the deck for more complete, more consistent. :)

In Unlimited though, I don’t like to see the same art twice, unless it’s a Pkmn of course. ha!

Fair enough. Because of things like DRE, Boost, Scramble, etc, there’s no need for 4 DCEs in unlimited, anyways.

What should I search for if I’m looking for those holo Base Set style basic energies?

I use this in Magic Kaladesh block to track my energy, and a lot of other people do too…

The name of this card is probably the biggest “um, actually…” in the TCG.
