This is just soooooo slow. And doesn’t even hit that hard for today’s meta. Anyways, I think it’s interesting with Archie’s Blastoise in Expanded.

With mono-water, this can do 200 damage for 4 with the potential to increase after that. Taking into account Gyarados-EX‘s Stormy Seas which has a 50% chance of getting at least 1 Water Energy…

…means a 50% chance of attacking for no effect at all. That is not good. Even attaching a single Energy to itself (via attacking) isn’t particularly impressive in the current environment, so there is only about a one-in-four chance of “Stormy Seas” really paying off. We also have at least one prominent attacker that punishes you for having a lot of Energy attached, loading up on Energy at the cost of an attack can actually backfire in another manner as well.

You are probably better off including some form of alternate Energy acceleration, and if you cannot get either “Blast Geyser” or “Splash Burn” (on Gyarados-EX) ready, just trying to hide out on the Bench and leaving something else up front to take the hit (and attack if it is able). That does not make M Gyarados-EX or even Gyarados-EX bad cards, just not as impressive as they might seem at first glance. Also, don’t forget that for the extra damage you’ve got to discard two cards from the top of your deck. Sometimes that can help, often it will be only a minor nuisance, but sometimes it can be quite problematic!

Your idea with using Stormy Seas is similar to having a Mega Evolution deck without Spirit Links. Originally Mega Pokémon did not have spirit links and therefore no one was playing them. Gyarados-EX has better options for Energy acceleration. One could be 4 Max Elixir, 4 Mega Turbo, and a Clawitzer line together with DCE and/or Splash Energy. Maybe even Blastoise in expanded.
