I still use this guy, he’s only got better because he now evolves too! His Smokescreen is good because it doesn’t just prevent attacks done to Magmar but prevents any attack so you can stall your opponents set-up.
Probably the 2nd best Magmar after the Team Rocket Returns one, though this one made more of an impact during its time in Modified.

I’m a bit confused what you’re getting at here. A Scyther with Defneder?

A Jungle Scyther, Plus Power was applied after weakness

I forgot about that. PlusPower has changed so much that its easy to forget how it used to work.

This was one of the best fire basics of the original TCG.

Despite having 20 HP less, I am finding the extra 10 damage for a single {R} that Energy Intro Set Magmar offers to be far more useful than Fossil Magmar’s Smokescreen effect – at least when playing against the NPCs in Pokémon TCG GB2. I don’t know if the trade-off is worthwhile against a real player.

being able to attack with a single energy is a huge advantage against the energy removals real players would use in most formats involving these two Magmar, so I would prefer this one. Also it can be used in stalling or Wigglytuff decks to gain time

Yep! Fossil Magmar is great in Base-Fossil, Base-Rocket and Prop 15/3 (Not so much in vanilla Base-Gym if Jason Klaczynski’s lists are a good measure of Base-Gym’s meta). Great for stalling and efficient damage, plus it has a lower retreat cost than Base Set Electabuzz and Hitmonchan. The Japanese exclusive Magmar being able to do 20 for 1 is cool, but what makes Hitmonchan’s Jab strong is just how many Pokémon (Base Set Electabuzz and Chansey, Jungle Wigglytuff, Clefable, Kangaskhan, Snorlax and Lickitung, Erika’s Jigglypuff, and Super Fang Lt. Surge’s Raticate, to list most of the relevant examples) it hits for weakness… the most relevant Fire-weak Pokémon in those early formats are Scyther and the Dark Vileplume line, but Fossil Magmar still makes to make itself valuable in Wigglytuff/Magmar, Lickitung/Moltres, and basic toolboxes in Base-Fossil/Base-Rocket, and in Wigglytuff/Blaine’s Rapidash, Blaine’s Charmander Control, and Hitmonchan/Charmeleon/Charizard (An actual deck that’s doing well so far: https://retrotcgs.com/2025/01/20/prop-15-3-deck-diary-charizard/) in Prop 15/3, playing the roles of efficient big basic and staller.
