Really interesting design, here. It’s SO vulnerable to lightning that even using a lightning type effect at all takes away 1/5 of its life for something that eelektrik could do more effectively.
It’s funny, too, that such an obvious contender to be a lightning type delta species would also be so weak to lightning. It’s a shame that there aren’t really any good cards that are powered by discarding energy from the top of your deck. This would be a wonderful combo piece alongside them.

Blastoise from Platinum. And this goes nicely with Rough Seas

this thing would be sick with some cards in the format today like ether, ray ex and heatmor

The final appearance of Remoraid’s unique atrophied Mantine design, before DP got rid of it. This was an incredibly cool design quirk of Mantine, evoking the artillery of a fighter plane and being a rare case of a symbiotic relationship between unrelated species leading to a different design (comparable to Shellder’s Slowbro and Slowking designs).

Although Mantine still has Remoraid in the HGSS art and subsequent card artwork, Remoraid only uses its regular design, and sprites and 3D models from DP onward have Mantine entirely alone. Ironic, considering DP also mechanically solidified their relationship by Mantyke’s evolution requiring Remoraid in the party. I guess the idea is that the Remoraid is still with you, but that’s a dumb as hell excuse :v

I almost wonder if the subtle fighter plane thing was deemed inappropriate, but now we have Dragapult which is even more explicit about it, so.

I doubt enough people even understood the fighter plane aspect of Mantine’s design, so that could’ve flown under the radar. It was presumably done as a brand standardization/sanitation approach, and probably happened as part of the planning process for Generation 4 – designing Mantyke meant taking a second look at Mantine, and so too many eyes on this idiosyncratic Remoraid design could’ve meant ample opportunity for someone from any number of teams or departments to decide this was an inconsistency that needed to be “fixed”. (My shot-in-the-dark-guess would be it resulted from feedback from OLM.)

That’s a very stupid pun, or joke, or whatever, in that first sentence, and I’m only now realizing I made it. How absolutely ridiculous.

A friend of mine was recently victim to OLM’s mass layoffs, so I’m more than happy to blame them for this too :U

I always saw it as a nod to the Remora fish’s phoresy relationship with other aquatic species?

It’s that too! Remoraid getting a new design when attached to Mantine seemed inspired by such relationships in general, since such species often have physiological changes when attached (though afaik actual remora don’t have any changes — their special suction cup fin is all they need)
