OK, so like, pursuant to a confused comment I made on RR Scizor 4, it looks like at some point, Hyper Beam began to be mistranslated. This print of the card is based on a Metagross whose attack text reads “コインを1回投げオモテなら、相手のエネルギーを1個トラッシュする。” and ‘1 Energy’ looks like the correct translation to me, but this same text is going to show up on several other instances of the Hyper Beam attack across Generation 3 and 4 and it seems like with the exception of this card, they’ll keep copypasting an effect that says “1 Energy” instead of “1 Energy card”.
At least I think so? I don’t know, there’s something really wonky going on here. If anyone else is interested, it’d help things along if someone else took a look at cards with appearances of “Hyper Beam” and “Crushing Blow” in Gen 3 and 4 of the TCG, their respective JP cards, and gave their input on what’s going on. I feel like I’ve sort of mixed myself up looking back and forth between all these cards trying to figure out where the error is.
