What’s the reason for the Pokemon in the background of these Mewtwo EXs? Why these three Pokemon?

While the short answer is “I don’t know”, this is a pretty interesting rabbit hole. BREAKthrough, BREAKpoint, and Fates Collide had this sort of story (more than a usual set would have anyway) about two worlds, a forest one and a city one, merging together. You can see this in a ton of artwork for the sets.
Specifically related to Mewtwo, each Mega Mewtwo belonged to one of the worlds. In the pack art you can see Mega Mewtwo X in a forest, and Y floating over a city. Similarly, Cresselia in the set is flying over a city as well, while Meloetta is in a forest.
The most interesting part is the non legendary Pokémon. Each one has two basics (Zorua, Axew, Chespin, and Magnemite) in the set that show one living in the city world and one in the forest world.
Long story short, I don’t know what it means, but I think each Mewtwo EX represents the Pokémon from that world coming together as everything goes nuts.

I was slightly wrong, Meloetta is in an old fashioned town, which could still be part of forest world but may not be.

What an incredible insight! Thanks so much–there’s definitely some sort of “deepest lore” going on here! I wish we knew more of the backstory behind some of these artworks. I love when the TCG sets do “world-building”–I especially enjoyed the Holon lore from back in the -ex era :)
