Miracle Sphere 𝛾
Trainer › (Item) › Technical Machine · is: Sphere

Attach this card to 1 of your Evolved {G}, {W}, or {L} Pokémon in play. That Pokémon may use this card’s attack instead of its own. At the end of your turn, discard Miracle Sphere γ.

{L}{C}{C} → Thunder Force : 30+
If the Pokémon using this attack has {G} and {L} basic Energy cards attached to it, the Defending Pokémon is now Asleep and Poisoned. If the Pokémon using this attack has {W} and {L} basic Energy cards attached to it, this attack does 30 damage plus 10 more damage and lets you put 1 damage counter on each of your opponent’s Benched Pokémon.

Useful if your opponent is terrible at arcade shmups.

Rainbow + Double Colorless = I do 40, put you to sleep, and spread 10 to your bench.

Assuming both of those were legal at the time of this perticular TM.

I’m pretty sure rainbow was, but I know the most recent DCE at the time was in Base Set and that the first rotation was Team Rocket- On, so I’m not sure it was legal.

That assumption is irrelevant, as the text of the card specifies the need for the specific basic Energy cards to be attached, not just the Energy. Even then, you need to pick which particular Energy it counts as “at a time”, and while I’m sure some persuasive arguments have been made in the past, there’s no way to read that so as to facilitate making it wildly fluctuate from {G} to {L} to {W}.. you’d be picking it as providing {L} Energy to afford the Energy cost of the attack, and you’d have to stick with that for the entire attack.

I haven’t phrased this comment particularly well – ‘picking’ came up as a point of contention on another site. I can’t think of a better way to articulate that, though. It’s still not not fantastically relevant to this card because it has specified the need for *basic* Energy, but my comment should be taken with a grain of salt, because there are conditions where Rainbow Energy can, and basically is, “wildly fluctuating from {G} to {L} to {W}”.

While it is true Rainbow does nothing for this card since it’s not a basic energy, it *is* the case that Rainbow Energy would in theory fulfill the requirements of all the effects here if it weren’t for that specification. There’s no need to pick what Energy Rainbow Energy counts as “at a time”, because Rainbow Energy counts as all types of Energy at all times. The response you linked over on Lost Thunder Ho-Oh covered this:
          https://archive.ph/uzDOI
“Also note that you don’t “decide it is providing Grass Energy”.
It provides Grass Energy whether you want it to or not. and Fire Energy. And Dark Energy. Etc.”

“Picking” is probably a point of contention because the phrase “provides only 1 Energy at a time” is being interpreted in different ways. You’re reading that as only “1 type of Energy at a time”, when the intended meaning is “1 unit of Energy at a time”.

Yeah, I’m using “picking” even though on reflection, I don’t mean “picking”. The Q&A translation I posted on CEC Crabominable was relevant to the conversation because the way I’ve always thought of it is “I’m picking Rainbow Energy as providing {F} Energy to cover the cost of the attack, but it’s also counting as [other] Energy at the same time”. It’s not that I don’t understand how Rainbow Energy works, it’s more the way I’ve always understood it, in my mind, is weirdly phrased.

The conclusion I’ve come to in my heart is that “at a time” is the core of my problem with it, as it’s a phrase exclusive to the English print, coming from all the way back in WOTC times. But everyone else seems to have handled what I see as self-contradicting text of Rainbow Energy fine so I’m fine with admitting “I’m the worst person at trying to explain how Rainbow Energy works ¯\_(ツ)_/¯”

            There is one last thing here, and I admit in hindsight I’m probably wrong;
            · In the hypothetical scenario the card said “If the Pokémon using this attack has {G} and {L} Energy attached to it…”, then I would’ve been fine with saying 1 Rainbow Energy meets the requirement.
            · In the hypothetical scenario the card said “If the Pokémon using this attack has {G} and {L} Energy cards attached to it…”, I would’ve argued it’s looking for at least 2 different Energy cards to be attached to it, and you would need 2 Rainbow Energy attached to be able to say you’ve met the requirement. I can no longer make up my mind if I’m right but even if I am I am clearly the worst person to try and articulate the rationale.
