Would be funny if it’s ruled Pokemon ex are differrent from Pokemon-ex because one has an associated logo and the old one is hypenated in card text.
Less funny is all the confusion having both Pokemon EX and Pokemon ex in an officially supported format will cause. Not sure the nostalgia pull is significant enough to offset all the potential Safeguard-style immunity arguments.

Oh, and the reason I’m saying this on Briney is because if the new ex *are* ruled to be the same as the old ex, then a bunch of old gen 3 cards with ex-specific wording can conceivably get reprints without any major adjustments (aside from maybe removing the hyphen). Briney being the best example — would love to see him return!

It’s obvious to me that the difference in hyphenation is deliberate and there will be no compatibility/interactions between Gen III “-ex” and Gen IV “ex”; but it would be good to cross-reference against the Japanese cards just the same.

Looks like Japanese ex-referencing cards from gen 3 don’t use the hyphen, but I could definitely see them ruling they’re different mechanics in the absence of any actual differences anyway.

AFAIK we don’t have any images of the Japanese Gen IX cards yet, but while trying to track it down, it occurred to me that III’s “Pokémon-ex” will necessarily be different from IX’s “Pokémon 𝒆𝒙” not just because of the hyphenation but also the different characters. For Japan, we’re probably going to be looking at a case of “ポケモンex” vs “ポケモン𝒆𝒙”. Pretty easy to create a circumstance where no ruling is necessary at all, but they might have to in case some people insist they cannot, or else genuinely cannot, understand the difference. (I mean, did they ever have to issue a formal ruling that III’s “Pokémon-ex” were different from V’s “Pokémon-EX”? Hopefully not, but…)
