Interesting artwork. The inside of some ancient temple?

The same goes for Nidorina from Skyridge too. Pretty interesting ilustrations they had xD

It feels like artwork back in the Neo/E-series/ex-series had a lot more thought put into it, as many of those sets had some sort of underlying story, rather than today, where sets like Flashfire and Phantom Forces are defined by the fact that most of their cards exist just to buff a specific type.

Yes, I think the same way. Still nowadays are cards like chikorita/fennekin and Shellder/Solosis but that… That is good, but there are only a few ones like those. I dont catch why they decided to make 3d ilustrations for almost everything…

The artwork has definitely gotten less detailed. At some point a majority of the artists switched to digital mediums and (in my opinion) the results look cheap and sterile. There’s not as much charm to the art as there used to be. It was probably a decision made for costs/efficiency.

There are still some really good artists (kawayoo and TOKIYA, particularly), and really the only thing I don’t like is how pretty much every card is illustrated by 5ban Graphics, and there’s just not a lot of variety.

kawayoo, TOKIYA, sui, 5ban Graphics, Kanako Eo, Naoki Saito, and Shin Nagasawa in my opinion are the best artists for the TCG.

Who even IS this “5Ban” guy?

I am astonishingly late to the party here, but the location of this card is the Ancient Ruins stadium from the same set. Nidoran is perched on the windowsill looking in. The position of the statues and the vine climbing the window frame are identical.

I’m revisiting the artwork in this set (thanks to your comment, 2yb) and I’m all these years later picking up on the themes going on, centered around the set’s Stadiums. To point out a smattering of the cards:

        1. Ancient Ruins: see: Arcanine, Gengar, Nidoqueen, Oracle
        2. Mirage Stadium: see: Flareon, Abra
        3. Mystery Zone: see: Magneton, Natu
        4. Underground Lake: see: Aerodactyl, Kabutops, Underground Expedition

There’s also a megalith (which may correspond with Mystery Zone): Cleffa, Kadabra, Mystery Plate Beta

Have other sets been like this? Details zooming straight over my head. An artwork tagger would be useful to tie all these cards together…
