Its behavior is noticeably unstable, which is apparently due to the incompetence of the engineer who updated its programming.

I could imagine them reprinting this ability but as like a VSTAR ability or something

Dragonite VSTAR is probably the closest we’ll get.

Potentially the most notable beneficiary of Lugia VSTAR’s ability:
    Ability: Assemble Star (VSTAR Power)
You may use this during your turn. Choose up to 2 [C] Pokemon from your discard pile, except for Pokemon with a Rule Box, and put them on your Bench. (Pokemon V, Pokemon-GX, etc. have Rule Boxes). (You can’t use more than 1 VSTAR Power in a game.)

With all the DCE variants in Expanded, this enables some absolutely absurd energy acceleration. The one issue is that, unlike basic energy users like Plasma Blast Blastoise, searching and recycling effects are much more limited for special energy. I’m also not sure what exactly *wants* that much Colorless energy — though this does accelerate Rainbow and Aurora Energy as well, so pretty much any strong DCE-compatible attacker can be worth consideration. Counter Energy could enable some silly plays as well. Something to keep an eye on!

Ho-Oh V? Apparently that card is going to be a bit too slow to get going in Standard but this combo would let it max out Rainbow Burn that much quicker.

Oh, never mind. Apparently despite the updated text of Rainbow Burn suggesting the attack does extra damage for each different type of “Basic Energy” attached, there was a ruling that it would still only do damage for each different type of “Basic Energy card”.
