Classic Bill, Poke Drawer+, and Erika are all in the running too…but yes, Oak is incredible and just gets better and better as your deck improves. If you’re running a deck that is routinely able to empty cards from its hand, you’re doing it right…and Oak rewards that by allowing you to draw insane amounts after you empty it. The only drawback is the fact that multiple Oaks might be in hand together.. this is why unlimited decks often only run three Oaks.
N isn’t really a good draw card when you compare it to the old stuff, it’s just a nice disruption for the late game (which doesn’t really exist in Unlimited). And also, N is still legal, and even if it wasn’t, that wouldn’t be because of power reasons.
Since this is apparently a point of contention, and since I literally cannot find a source anywhere on the internet that backs up your suggestion that N was banned in tournaments, can you cite me a single ruling, issued by an official judge, in which the card was banned?
Note that they explicitly refer to the BW Black Star Promos Numbered 51 and up, but said nothing about an apparent ban of a Black Star Promo.
N was used extensively in the 2014 Pokemon World Championship in every division, so presumably if it was banned the ruling would be fairly new (and contentious.)
lol you really looked it up… I have played in many tournaments in the tristate and I never bring my decks with N in them because I have had to sub in a different deck one too many ties or else Ill be disqualified. Apparently it is a rule in some areas.
Well, WotC (or whoever was in charge of Organized Play back then) did ban Sneasel and Slowking for power reasons, but Nintendo never banned anything indeed.
Yeah, sorry, I was talking about the western OP.
And I don’t know about the Japanese formats, but didn’t they at one point have a points list?
Also, the banned cards you mentioned are probably also not banned because of power reasons, but because of their limited distribution.
The cards I mentioned cost 3, basically restricting them.
Mewtwo Lv X was banned for power reason in the metagame. But the others are because of their scarcity obviously.
Even if you meant to say that, everyone else understood it as “N is banned in official Pokemon tournaments”, so you could have corrected it 22 days ago.
N is still legal for tournaments, as he was printed as a promo (BW 100) . Professor Oak isn’t just banned from all non-unimited competitive play, but he is actually unprintable in his current state. He would be a direct (and massive) power creep of Professor Juniper, which is seen as a viable card as is.
Start with one. Discard and draw up to 7 draw another oak, discard and draw up to 7 and so on. You of course may not always get an oak in those 7 but you will also have bill, erika, computer search, pokedrawer+ and so on. Decks can win on turn one with all.those cards almost every time
You play one Oak, you draw 7 cards. you draw item Finder, you retrieve Oak, you draw 7 cards. You draw an Oak, you draw 7 cards. You draw a Computer Search, search for Oak , you draw 7 cards… etc.
Oh please. Don’t play the “I have a bigger one than you”. I don’t care how many cards you have. I basically played every important tournament in France back at base set era.
I playtested everyday at this time, clearly playing too much to this game. I played those “Hitmonchan Electabuzz Doduo Farfetch’d”-like decks right at the very first day the game came out here. I don’t give a shit about how you have 15,000+ cards. I have 15,000+ games in Base / Base-Jungle / Base-Fossil / Base-TR metagames.
Even if you haven’t played any sort of standard, you said you have played a lot of Base set, and in any format in which Base set is allowed, both old Bill and Professor Oak are pretty broken.
Even if you are only talking about shear number of drawing. N is outclassed by this, Juniper/Sycamore, Colress, Steven’s Advice and many others. Plus it can give your opponent a fresh hand too. N is primarily a disruptive card that can be useful for drawing yourself. Not in the same league as straight out draw. And it is still legal!
Many people say that Contract from Below is in fact the best card in Magic, and this one lacks the annoying downside of “losing one of your cards forever if you lose”.
That’s a tall order, to be honest. Magic had Ancestral Recall but I’d argue three cards and no discarding for U is more effective in Magic than dumping your hand for 7 in Pokemon.
I think a better equivalent to Oak in Magic would be Wheel of Fortune, other than the fact that WoF makes every player dump their hands. On the flip side, Oak is free versus playing for WoF, so I think it evens out a bit.
All Trainers that weren’t Stadiums or Supporters and don’t have “Item” printed on them are now classified as Items to align with modern-day rules, and the search function works accordingly. We realize that the word “Item” doesn’t actually appear on these cards, so we’ll be introducing some slight UI tweaks soon to indicate that the Item category is implied, even though it wasn’t originally there.
reshikrom64
In unlimited play we often count this as a Supporter. Mostly because it’s kind of a douchebag move to those using Juniper.
Mantidactyle
BEST. TRAINER. IN. THE. ENTIRE. GAME.
Absolutely NOTHING beats this.
Best draw card in the game.
Best stupid combo with discard card in the game.
Best “I can win on turn one” card in the game.
Nothing comes even close.
This card is the exact definition of “Broken Card”.
Kristóf Muzsik
There’s a reason why this wasn’t reprinted in Base Set 2. It’s just too good.
Benjamin Poke Battler
I know it’s alright but is it really that good? It isn’t very useful in battles for me.
jelze
-.- It’s easily the best draw card ever printed.
feyblade

N is the best draw card ever printed. that’s why it is now illegal to play in tournaments.

On the official website, I can see nothing expressly mentioning that N was banned .

He didn’t need to look it up because it is legal. Unless it is an unofficial non Play! Pokemon tournament it is a legal card and always has been
Benjamin Poke Battler
can’t understand your grammar
HEZ
How about we stop replying to the troll bot now? It’s just spamming up the front page!
We all know Oak is good and N is Standard legal.
Benjamin Poke Battler
Not all of us
Ziggmiceter
Since its printing, N has never been illegal. Pokemon has never banned a card since it took over the game and probably never will.
Dark Kira
Well, WotC (or whoever was in charge of Organized Play back then) did ban Sneasel and Slowking for power reasons, but Nintendo never banned anything indeed.

The Japanese DP Extended format bans Tropical Beach, Mewtwo Lv. X, Miracle Diamond, and Mysterious Pearl iirc.

They have banned cards from certain tournaments, not the actual market.

Not in any official Pokémon tournament
Benjamin Poke Battler
that’s what I just said
Dark Kira
Even if you meant to say that, everyone else understood it as “N is banned in official Pokemon tournaments”, so you could have corrected it 22 days ago.

I don’t get on this every day. Sorry to not be too nerdy.

You do realize that you can draw half your deck by playing 4 Oak ?
Benjamin Poke Battler
tell me how you will magically have 4 Oak in your hand
jelze
Start with one. Discard and draw up to 7 draw another oak, discard and draw up to 7 and so on. You of course may not always get an oak in those 7 but you will also have bill, erika, computer search, pokedrawer+ and so on. Decks can win on turn one with all.those cards almost every time

Mantidactyle
You clearly never played in Base Set. That is a very common occurrence.
Benjamin Poke Battler
I have 15,000+ cards. I have played more base set than you, trust me.
Mantidactyle
Oh please. Don’t play the “I have a bigger one than you”. I don’t care how many cards you have. I basically played every important tournament in France back at base set era.

U mad much? At least I don’t write novels on here about how many games I’ve played :P
jelze
Obviously not to any sort of standard if you think Oak and Bill are useless.
Benjamin Poke Battler
never said that
Dark Kira
Even if you haven’t played any sort of standard, you said you have played a lot of Base set, and in any format in which Base set is allowed, both old Bill and Professor Oak are pretty broken.

suck it

Nope, they have banned it in previous tournaments
jelze
Such as what? Its been legal to play in all pokemon tournaments since its release in 2011
Benjamin Poke Battler
not all
Brian Duddy
Arguably the best card ever printed in any major TCG.
Mantidactyle
Contract from Below is the closest card in Magic, and it’s an ante card so it’s banned.
