Attach Rainbow Energy to 1 of your Pokémon. While in play, Rainbow Energy counts as every type of basic Energy but only provides 1 Energy at a time. (Doesn’t count as a basic Energy card when not in play.) When you attach this card from your hand to 1 of your Pokémon, it does 10 damage to that Pokémon. (Don’t apply Weakness and Resistance.)

Am I missing something, or is this almost strictly worse than Energy Search?

Other way round…

You’re missing something. Some decks like self damage, some decks play one rainbow as a tech instead of playing the basic and energy search.

That’s right! Some Pkmn attacks are immediately powered-up when they have damage counters on them.
Quarter-Turn
It saves space. Also, often the 10 damage isn’t a big deal.
It makes running one-of techs a lot easier.

Sometimes it is. Think of PlusPower. It’s a good card. And back then, everything had less HP, so… I know it’s a good card and it saves pace, but using an Energy Search is a safer option.

Let’s say I’m playing a dark deck with 2 or 3 Pokémon requiring Psychic energies.
If I play Energy Search and Psychic Energies, sometimes I’ll have Psychic Energies in my hand when I need Dark Energies.
With Rainbow Energy, I don’t have this problem.

Back then, Rainbow was even more powerful than it is now. Not only were there more decks running several types that would benefit from it (although Energy Search was an option for that) but when the Neo sets came out, you pretty much had to play rainbow in Dark or Metal decks. There was no such thing as basic energies for either type yet, so you could only have 4 of their specials and 4 rainbows. Energy search would be useless in a deck like that.

Darkness and Metal actually counted as basic energy types? Because if that’s the case, Rainbow Energy was indeed extremely helpful.
