I feel like saying something rather controversial–Tag Teams were awesome. They were broken, but they feel, pound for pound so flavorful, unique, and like the absolute peak making individual cards feel like the coolest stuff ever. Reshizard is one of the more “vanilla” Tag Teams, but it feels like a behemoth, the embodiment of everything a Fire type Pokemon is turned up to 11. The thing I feel like people don’t acknowledge with Tag Teams is that while they did end up having a negative impact on the game, the card design philosophy that we tend to celebrate in the Sun and Moon era is very present in the Tag Teams, and most Tag Teams feel like they were genuinely trying to be interesting. If we transitioned directly from Cosmic Eclipse into Scarlet and Violet, Tag Teams would probably not be hated as much as they are now. VMAX Pokemon suffered so hard from basically being blank, 1 attribute cards that do nothing interesting, especially at the start, so the format was essentially just Tag Teams who did the interesting stuff with not enough competition, or VMAX Pokemon that were big enough to keep doing the same one thing over and over again. I hope we never see 3 prize normal Pokemon ever again, but I hope they keep being bold and try crazy things like Tag Teams again.

I also regard Tag Teams quite fondly, and I think the thematic element is especially worthy of praise. Pairing multiple pokemon on a single card isn’t new, but the particular pairs they went for are generally superb — often either going for a pleasant contrast in designs (apparent in the initial reveal of Pikachu & Zektom) or going for designs that are in some way synergistic (the fire-breathing dragon angle of Charizard & Reshiram).
Mechanically, it was also neat how the attacks represented would often correspond to archetypal attacks of the composite pokemon. In this case, Outrage represents Reshiram (being a common attack on Reshiram cards) while Flare Strike corresponds to Charizard (representing Charizard’s historic tendency toward high energy costs). The GX attacks would then represent those pokemon working together in some capacity.
I think it would’ve been neat and better-balanced if Tag Team cards required playing two halves from hand akin to the old LEGEND cards, but I see why they didn’t go that route. Fragmented cards kinda just feel awkward to play, pull, and display.
