I’ve always been a bit creeped out by the fact that Rhydon loses its ears when it evolves into Rhyperior.
I’ve interpreted its design as wearing construction earmuffs when it evolves. An example of the ear coverings can be seen on this Wikipedia page:

That makes sense considering it evolves using the Protector item. The plates surrounding its belly also evoke a haramaki, a type of Japanese bellywatmer (that historically began as armor), which can also be seen in Diggersby — another construction-themed pokemon.

Wait, no, not construction — demolitions! Complete with a wrecking ball tail! The localization team likely caught this, hence renaming Rock Cannon to Rock Wrecker.
