When would you ever want to play this card in your deck?? Unless you have some super-secret strategy, your opponent is always going to discard the two cards that they think would be most useful to you. It would be better to just play a vanilla “draw 3” card, IMO!

I don’t think a worse supporter card exists

    Riley makes Rival look playable.

I will say, I hope some day Pokémon introduces a “Fact or Fiction” style supporter, which these are seemingly trying to imitate. It would effectively just be “Reveal the top five cards of your deck. Your opponent separates those cards into two piles. Put one pile into your hand and the other into your discard pile.” That way you can really play mind games with your opponent rather than just having them dump your best cards while giving you nothing.

The JP card for this is one of the few error cards in East Asia. Specifically, it lists the illustrator as AYUMI ODASHIMA, not Ken Sugimori.

I looked it up in the respective card databases, and it appears to be an error in Japanese and Traditional Chinese, but interestingly was corrected by the time the Korean, Thai, and Indonesian versions were released. Assuming Gym promo pack 9 coincides with the release of Star Birth in each language, it only took 6 weeks from when they discovered and reported the error (2022-01-07) to when the first corrected versions (Korean and Thai) were released (2022-02-25).

I’m guessing AYUMI ODASHIMA illustrating the background is the reason for the error; it kinda looks like their work.

Whats funny is the card card would be considered decent in Magic the Gathering because there is way more interaction with the discard pile and less consistent ways to find the cards you need.

There’s a card like that in magic called intuition and you’re absolutely correct. Similarly, there’s also painful choice in yugioh. You could argue that there’s synergy with cards like night stretcher or Klara that return cards to your hand, but it’s also not as efficient in Pokemon.
