    For whatever reason there was a brief time where Sandslash cards could have zero retreat. I’m not sure why this was ever the case, but being one of my favorite Pokémon, I miss it.

      My guess is it might’ve been something they did to define the Ground types as having their own little niche in the big Fighting umbrella? Rocks were all big and bulky (Base Onix‘s 3 retreat was fairly conspicuous for a Basic; Jungle Rhyhorn‘s 3 retreat was almost certainly conspicuous for a Basic that evolved); Fighting types proper were kind of in the middle; Ground Pokémon erred towards lighter retreats

        That’s probably true, given that all of the non-rock type ground types in the first generation were a bit faster (Dugtrio being a true speedster). Though looking at those early cards, Dugtrio had a retreat of 2 and Sandslash a retreat of 1. Maybe we’re reading a bit too deep into the card design here.
