Crushing Blow appears to have been mistranslated. It should simply say to discard an Energy, not an Energy card.

Actually, hold that thought, I’m not terrifically confident. Here are 3 cards I’m looking at right now and something just doesn’t seem right, with some possibly implications on myriad other cards. Does “する” really mean anything in this context or is it just syntax? Maybe Granbull was actually mistranslated.
EX Unseen Forces Granbull’s Crushing Blow;
JP card: コインを1回投げオモテなら、相手のエネルギーを1個トラッシュする。
EN card: Flip a coin. If heads, discard an Energy attached to the Defending Pokémon.
RR Scizor E4’s Crushing Blow;
JP card: コインを1回投げオモテなら、相手のエネルギーを1個トラッシュ。
EN card: Flip a coin. If heads, discard an Energy card attached to the Defending Pokémon.
Arceus Bronzong’s Hyper Beam;
JP card: コインを1回投げオモテなら、相手のエネルギーを1個トラッシュ。
EN card: Flip a coin. If heads, discard an Energy card attached to the Defending Pokémon.

Gameplay-wise, discarding “1 Energy” vs “1 Energy card” function exactly the same since no card provides half an Energy. Both would allow you to still discard a Double Colorless Energy even though it technically provides 2 Energy, DCE would not be “protected” from the “discard 1 Energy” phrasing. It seems like the “する” is superfluous.

Yeah, I was on the tail end of spending a couple hours(???) looking at the history of Hyper Beam and related moves in the TCG and was pretty mentally burnt out so I was like “there can’t possibly be any reason する would change the meaning like this.”
It does indeed look like Hyper Beam was being mistranslated incorrectly for most of Gen 3 and Gen 4 of the TCG¹, and this card would be an instance of the Crushing Blow attack being translated incorrectly – but there’s no practical game scenario where it would make a difference, so there’s not really any scenario where it would make a difference.
¹ Hyper Beam’s attack effect on POP1 Metagross and HL Claydol was translated correctly, saying “1 Energy” rather than “1 Energy card”. Every other instance for Gen 3 & 4 goes with the latter.

What about an “energy” like Holon’s Electrode?
