Ill tempered, it fights by swinging its barbed tail around wildly. The leaf growing on its head is very bitter.

What was the reasoning behind the exception in the attack here? Were they just making sure that the expectedly incredibly common Monkey Trio ditto wouldn’t always end in a stalemate?

In fact, this is the only Pokemon with an effect of this type that has this exception. All others that I could find (FST Melmetal, Alolan Vulpix VStar, and Cornerstone Mask Ogerpon ex) don’t have this exception, so it seems particularly weird.
It’s also funny because this is the very first Simisage card to have an ability, so it is definitely this Simisage that they were accounting for. If they were really so concerned about the Monkey Trio ditto, why not extend it to except any case where the opposing Pokemon’s ability was “Monkey Trio”? Idk why Simisear and Simipour can’t hit through this for some reason

The Simisage clause is unusually narrow, but cards with guaranteed “prevent all damage” effects are pretty consistently designed to prevent stalemate mirror matches. Cards like Cornerstone Ogerpon ex and Archaludon VMAX have “ignore all effects” attacks, Terapagos ex excludes Colorless Pokemon, various Mr. Mime cards place damage counters, and plenty of cards just target other categories.

And neither Alolan Vulpix VSTAR nor FST Melmetal have abilities, so they already don’t wall themselves.

Thank you both for your input, that makes a lot of sense!
