Incredibly slow and dopey. It takes 5 seconds for it to feel pain when under attack.

What a beautiful piece of artwork. The subtle and complex detail in the background is second to none.

Why, the very sight of it pronounces to my heart an abundance of pleasing adjectives that I have never even known, this is truly outstanding, in its own field, if you know what i mean.
Logan
Wow… This is so good someone had to copy it and stick it in their legendary collection.

This is actually Slowpoke’s second card in the TCG. An unnumbered promo* beat its appearance in the JP set Fossil is based on by a few weeks at best (this card had a May 1997 debut vs. Mystery of the Fossil’s June 21, 1997 release date). That promo got a reprint in Pokémon Web, but it’s ultimately this Slowpoke that has left more of an impression in the TCG, with a spiritual reprint** in Generations for the TCG’s 20th Anniversary, and Miki Tanaka’s version Slowpoke & Psyduck GX possibly another follow-up reference to this card.

** This phrase sounds ridiculous to me anymore. I’m tempted to start borrowing from Yu-Gi-Oh’s vocabulary and call these sorts of cards ‘retrains’, but I don’t know if that language would stick around long-term or it’d just be jargon I incomprehensibly throw around that eventually gets forgotten.

Aha! So I was technically wrong when I posted on UNM #218 that Tanaka illustrated Slowpoke’s first-ever card.
Now I just need to snag one of those Playmat cards for my collection…

Why does the card says that the it is illustrated by Miki Takano, but the website says its illustrated by Miki Tanaka?
JP
It’s a misspelling on the card! We choose to tag with the correct illustrator so it’s grouped correctly (the site doesn’t have capability for a “printed illustrator” vs “actual illustrator”).
(In 2016 they got the illustrator right on the Generations print that uses the same artwork.)

My favorite art, they look like they have the item shop theme from earthbound playing in their head.
