You know, since Toshinao Aoki came back after all, it would’ve been nice if they’d asked him back a bit sooner to recreate his Flying/Surfing Pikachu artwork for these Full Art Vs, and/or even do entirely new artwork for the VMAXes. (Maybe they did?)

I suspect the chain of events may have been contacting Toshinao Aoki as a courtesy to notify him they’re remaking his art (I doubt they needed permission; it’s just polite), which then established a line of dialogue with him expressing interest in making some new contribitions.
But it’s not impossible they asked him to do the Pikachus and he simply preferred to make some new art rather than just making something he’d already done become even bigger. He probably wanted something that shows off his skills more for his grand return, which Unown V does a *very* good job of.
