Team Magma’s Groudon · 100 HP · {F}{D}
Pokémon (Groudon) › Basic · is: Dual Type, Team Magma’s

Poké-BODY ⇢ Power Saver
As long as the number of Pokémon in play (both yours and your opponent’s) that has Team Magma in its name is 3 or less, Team Magma’s Groudon can’t attack.

{F}{C} → Linear Attack
Choose 1 of your opponent’s Pokémon. This attack does 20 damage to that Pokémon. (Don’t apply Weakness and Resistance for Benched Pokémon.)

{F}{F}{C} → Pulverize : 50+
If the Defending Pokémon already has at least 2 damage counters on it, this attack does 50 damage plus 20 more damage.

weak: {G}×2 | resist: n/a | retreat: 3
· Dual Type rule: This Pokémon is both {F}{D} type.

Simply my favourite card from my favourite deck of 2004, the year I got back into the game albeit non-competitively. Too bad I only have the theme deck and reverse foil versions. Would so love to have the real holo one.

Huh, that’s funny. I have this same card (non-foil) and never knew it was from a theme deck. Sadly, I was given this card last year and it’s obviously completely non-playable in ANY deck other than a Team Magma build. :/

Team Magma was a joy to play back then. I didn’t have the Camerupt or the Claydol that was used as energy accelerators in the Worlds-winning deck, but it was fun just playing with the theme deck itself. Maxie was such a cool Supporter, bringing back dead Groudons and Aggrons so easily.

Yeap, it won Worlds in 2004 IIRC.

Debut of “Linear Attack” in the TCG.
Not sure exactly why they chose this terminology: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/linear#English

It’s ちょくげきだん on the original. Google Translate and Yandex are choking on it, but DeepL is giving me “Direct Hit”, and, from watching some animes in my day, it does sound *similar* to what I usually often translated as “direct hit. Honestly, I’d give the translator the benefit of the doubt here – they might even be right.

ちょくげきだん and ちょくげき are both phrases in the language, and the latter is probably more accurate to being translated as “Direct Hit” – which is exactly what they did for SW Salamence‘s 3 years later, so it’s a bit of happy forethought to try and come up with a different name for the translation here. You can see how they did it, too – Direct>Linear, and Hit>Attack. Pretty cute.

In 2004, Pokémon printed a basic Pokémon featuring a legendary owned by an evil team leader, with an Ability that forbade it from attacking with fewer than three allies in play and HP on par with stage 1 ex’s. And it got a special Energy that provided two Energy at once for two types, one of which was darkness.
SPOILERS FOR THE NEXT ENGLISH SET

Now in 2025, Pokémon is printing a basic Pokémon featuring a legendary owned by an evil team leader, with an Ability that forbids it from attacking with fewer than three allies in play and HP on par with stage 1 ex’s. And it’s getting a special Energy that provided two Energy at once for two types, one of which was darkness.

All sorts of parallels to past cards are going to be drawn. Team Rocket’s Receiver is similar to Holon Transceiver, Team Rocket’s Giovanni is similar to Guzma, Team Rocket’s Archer is similar to Roxanne, and Team Rocket’s Energy is similar to Magma Energy and Aqua Energy.

Fwiw Power Saver counts all Team Magma Pokémon in play, not just your own!

Ooooh, yes, I remember that. I also remember watching a Team Magma’s Zangoose absolutely shred through a Team Magma’s Groudon with a 100+ damage Team Play.
