Are any of these actually the starters’ shiny versions? Mudkip definitely isn’t shiny. I wonder if the idea of ‘star’ cards being SHINY Pokemon was adopted after these original three were made.

Torchic star is definitely shiny (pale yellow body instead of orange)! I agree that the other two don’t look super-shiny. But they don’t *quite* match their normal colors either… almost like they are off-brand versions of the normal coloration. Mudkip star is a kind of dark blue whereas the non-shiny is a lighter blue… and this Treecko star looks a little bit blue-green, not quite pure green (its non-shiny color) although certainly not its neon blue shiny version either.

Also in Japan, EX Deoxys was released first and that set’s Pokemon star are definitely the shiny versions! (I’m looking at you, Ray star.) Not really sure what happened in this set that made it so that two of the three starters don’t quite look as they should…

My reply to this is belated, but around this time, the formal Japanese term for what the EN fandom always called “Shiny Pokémon” (and NOA/TPCI unwisely canonized) was basically “alt. color” – all these Pokémon are alternative colorations of the ‘standard’ colors we’re familiar with, so they are all “Shiny”. (c.f. my comment on Shining Mewtwo.)
